Six teams of average Joe’s battled in the first-ever Bragging-Rights Ultimate Dodgeball Tournament sponsored by the student council and Tracy Gregorc in the NHS Gymnasium on March 14.

The teams consisted of 10 players, with two of each gender. Players paid 10 dollars to participate or  100 dollars per team, and 2 dollars for spectator admission. The money was to help pay for the Senior Class Events and Senior Gift.

The idea of it came from when the senior student council approached Ms. Gregorc about it, and she thought it sounded like fun.

Ms. Gregorc hopes to make the Bragging-Rights Ultimate Dodgeball Tournament a yearly tradition for years to come.

“We hope to make this an annual event and to grow it with more participation from students and staff of the NWR1 district.” said Ms. Gregorc.

Of the six teams participating in the tournament, four were student teams, and two were faculty teams, including one  from NHS and 1 from High ridge Elementary.

Tyler Rockel of the winning team Clemdians was not feeling nervous leading his team into the tournament.

“I was feeling great, I took it pretty seriously coming in and just went for gold” said Rockel when asked how he felt leading up to the tournament.

Although they did not practice for the tournament they still won the bragging rights of the tournament.

“We had team uniforms made so that we could look professional as possible and we did not hold any team practices because we are just that good.” Tyler said when asked what they did to prepare for the tournament.

The team was not only skilled but they were also knowledged about the sport of Dodgeball.

“Yes, Dive Duck Dip Dive Dodge, and I live by it!” exclaimed Rockel when asked if he knew the essential 5 Ds of dodgeball.

He exclaimed that since he could dodge a dodgeball he could indeed dodge a wrench.

The rules for the tournament:

  • At opening rush, you can only grab balls to your right.

  • You are out if  you a thrown live ball hits your body,

you step over the center line or the opposing team

catches a ball you have thrown or you throw and hit another player in the head.

  1.  A thrown live ball may only take out 1 player.  If a

ball  hits the ground, the wall, other players or the

nets it is considered a dead ball.

  1.  You may block a thrown ball with another ball but if

you drop the ball or it grazes any part of your body,

          you are out.

  1.  When you are out, you must line up in order that

you were hit out.  When one of your players catches

a live ball, players may return to the game.

  1.  If you hold a ball for more than 20 seconds, it will be

considered dead.  Dead balls must be rolled over

         to the other team.

  1.  If the game comes down to 1 player per team–we

will enter showdown play.  The game is paused–

each player gets 2 balls and balls are placed at

the ends of the center line.  The center line is

dissolved.  First one to hit the other out wins.
