On homecoming weekend I took the amazing opportunity to travel for the first time ever to Las Vegas, Nevada with my niece, her mom, and her grandma.  The added bonus:  It was during school.

I was worried about all the work I would miss and lessons I would not learn for one full week. I took the initiative and got all the work before leaving town.  The nearly four-hour flight left MidAmerica Airport in Belleville, IL at 1:00 p.m.

We landed in breezy 85-degree sunny Vegas, took a shuttle to our hotel, and hung around Green Valley Ranch Resort Hotel shaking off the jet lag.  We gained two hours as Nevada shares the Pacific Time zone with California, so it didn’t seem weird to be in bed at 8:30 p.m. local time in the desert.

We walked the strip for five hours Monday. People hear all the rumors about The Strip, but you don’t understand until you actually go.  On The Strip you see a little bit of everything from street performers to people passed out on the sidewalk in their own stomach contents.  Vegas has much to offer for a first-timer; taco bars, the shops the New York, New York mall, tons of  other places to shop, people from all over, and wonderful memories to last a lifetime.

Many people associate Las Vegas with gambling, but as a 17-year old tourist I didn’t need to gamble to enjoy Vegas.  Of all the places we shopped and ate, my favorite stop was Dick’s Last Resort.  Dick’s is a restaurant famous for their “southern style menu and rowdy roadhouse environment” located in the Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

The schtick behind Dick’s Last Resort is their gruff discourteous wait staff who flip attitude and insults at each customer.  But it’s all in good fun, and the staff is super nice as you leave offering tips how to make the most of Vegas while you’re there.

The trip was a lot of fun, but now that I am behind in some things, it is stressful.  Taking a trip during school is not a bad thing to do, just make sure you get everything you will miss, and schedule a time with your teacher to review what you missed.
